BATHROOM WALL STORAGE
July 5th 2014

Here is a the bathroom wall storage I promised my wife I would build.........turned out pretty good if I do say so myself...........

MORE PICTURE LEDGES

This is the ledge my 17 year old wanted in her room.  6" base to be able to hold books.  This shelf is not going any where as it is held on the wall by 3" screws and attached to 3 seperate studs in the wall.

My 14 year wanted 2 shelves at only 4" for the base because she has some special photo's and paintings of her bunny's and her treasured Itzhak Perlman albums.  We had some smaller store bought shelves here before but they didn't really fill the space like these do.

PICTURE LEDGES AS BOOKSHELVES

Here are the specs for the shelves I build my wife for our daughters room.  This project is super easy and will take you less than half of an afternoon once you get all the wood.

TOOLS YOU WILL NEED:
1.  Arm saw or Circular Saw
2.  Nail gun or Kreg Jig (which is what I used)
3.  Glue
4.  Belt Sander or a way to sand quickly
5.  Paint
6.  2 SHARK wall anchors per shelf
7.  Drill and small drill bit
8.  Level
9.  Pencil
10. Paper towels or rags.
11. Saftey glasses & ear protection (b/c the belt sander is an ear killer)

Getting started.

1.  I just went to Home Depot and picked up some pine boards.  I bought the following

  • 1 12 ft long board that was 2 1/4 inch wide for the base shelf
  • 1 12 ft long board that was 2 inches wide for the back that will mount to the wall
  • 1 12 ft long board that was 1 inch for the front rail of the ledge.
2.  I used my radial arm saw to cut the pieces out once I measured my space
3.  You can see that the construction here is pretty basic and makes a great beginner project.  All of my screws are on the bottom so they are pleasing to look at as the Kreg Jig hides the screws.
4.  Time to break out your level, drill, and your screwdriver
5.  Once you figure out where you want the shelf on the wall, set your level on the shelf and mark where you want to drill your small pin holes.  Drilling throught the wood, into the wall, will tell you where you are going to put your SHARK wall anchors.
6.  Now that you can see where the achors are going to go, I use a screw driver to increase the size of the hole so I can hammer the anchors in.
7.  Before I drive my screws into the holes, I counter sink the holes with my screwdriver bit so the screws will be flush to the wood once I drive them in.
8.  You are ready to drive your screws into the shelf.
9.  Once the screws are throught the back of the wood, line them up with your wall anchors and finish screwing them to the wall.  If you are using an electric drill, don't drive them too fast or you will strip out the wall anchor.
10.  Repeat steps 1 through 9 for all shelves where you cannot hit a stud with a screw.  If you have studs then you will not need wall anchors.

Here is the finished product.

My wife loved these.  If you are looking for recipies and homeschool advice, check out my wife's blog at mommariffic.wordpress.com
